Part XIX: The Eternal Word of God

I. Meaning

a. The Word of God, as soon as it is written or spoken, is the Word of God, and does not cease being the Word of God.

i. In other words, the word of God remains the Word of God forever.

1. This however, does not deny the doctrine of progressive revelation.

II. The Word of God originates from God and is the Word of God from the beginning.

a. Explanation: The Word of God did not 'evolved' from someone's words and then become God's Words later on but it is rather God's Word's from the beginning.

b. "The Spirit of the LORD spoke through me; his word was on my tongue." (2 Samuel 23:2)

i. This is David's last words and oracle.

ii. Notice how God's word was already on David's tongues.

c. "This is the word that came to Jeremiah from the LORD" (Jeremiah 11:1)

i. Notice how the word from the LORD came upon Jeremiah, and not just only from Jeremiah.

III. Even later it was first spoken or written, the Word still remain the Word of God

a. "I remember your ancient laws, O LORD; and I find comfort in them." (Psalm 119:52)

i. Even if the laws of God are 'ancient', the Word is still relevant and also comforting.

b. "And said, 'Brothers, the Scripture had to be fulfilled which the Holy Spirit spoke long ago through the mouth of David concerning Judas, who served as guide for those who arrested Jesus" (Acts 1:16)

i. Note how what the Holy Spirit spoke is the Scriptures and through the human agency of David.

1. This verse reinforces the Evangelical doctrine of Inspiration of Scriptures.

ii. Even in the New Testament era, the Word of God in the Psalms remains the Word of God.

IV. The Word as eternal

a. "The grass withers and the flowers fall, but the word of our God stands forever." (Isaiah 40:8)

b. "Your word, O LORD, is eternal; it stands firm in the heavens." (Psalm 119:89)

i. Notice how the Psalmist declares that the Word stands firm in the heavens.

c. "Your laws endure to this day, for all things serve you." (Psalm 119:91)

d. "Your statutes are forever right; give me understanding that I may live." (Psalm 119:144)

i. Not only is His Word forever, but they are forever right and one ought to pray to God to understand it so as to live right with God.

e. "All your words are true; all your righteous laws are eternal." (Psalm 119:160)

i. Notice how in the last verse of Psalm 119, it talks about the truthfulness, righteous and eternal characteristic of Scripture.

f. "I tell you the truth, until heaven and earth disappear, not the smallest letter, not the least stroke of a pen, will by any means disappear, not the smallest letter, not the least stroke o a pen, will by any means disappear from the Law until everything is accomplished." (Matthew 5:18)

i. Even in the New Testament, Jesus affirm the eternity of God's Word.
